Late last summer my brother John and I walked along the west coast of Fife in Scotland, retracing the steps of mediaeval pilgrims. One murky morning in February, we crossed the River Forth to see what would happen if we mirrored the journey on the other side, following the water into Edinburgh. This is what I saw.
