“The shadow of the night is drawn like a black veil across the earth, and since almost all creatures, from one meridian to the next, lie down after the sun has set, so, he continues, one might, in following the setting sun, see on our globe nothing but prone bodies, row upon row, as if leveled by the scythe of Saturn – an endless graveyard for a humanity struck by falling sickness.”
Thank you! Atrocious as the memorial drain may be from an architectural point of view, I am glad the kids enjoy using it as the equivalent of a splash pad outside a YMCA.
Thank you for this cheerful start to the new year. A rather elegant elegy for the state of where we are. You Inuit a thousand years of history going slowly down a circular drain, not caused by war or famine but a collective shrugging of the shoulders before slumping on the sofa, feet up, drink and latest box set before sliding all the parts merge into one eternal blob.
Back when *Private Eye* was funny they had the parish newsletter for an imaginary parish of which Blair was the vicar. Apparently he was very wounded, which is nice. Either way they called the similar memorial in this parish "The Princess of Hearts Memorial Trench"
The Diana “fountain” is almost like some backhanded neg from the establishment. People’s Princess is it? Here you go.
For future reference: as an Irishman (Belfast too) I appreciate an American using and spelling “craic” in an appropriate fashion.
Not taking anything away though and just for better emphasis it’s typically “It was some craic” “It was great craic (all round)” “The craic was 90” “The craic was mighty” “Ah Jaysus it was some craic dere baoy” “It was some craic indeed” or often “I’m telling ye it was some craic now”.
The craic is never really described as excellent because the word has too many syllables and has an X in it. It doesn’t roll off the tongue or can be slowed down for emphasis. Also the craic by definition is excellent otherwise it wouldn’t be the craic. It would be a load of aul balls.

Yes.
Blighty was once a term of affection. Now it’s a descriptor.
I loved your piece and went and looked up the "shit fountain". It appears kids love it in bright shiny weather. https://youtu.be/cLK0SbybfH0?si=wDp-CXRd9_Ssflf7

Possibly an essential edit: “Ah Jaysus it was some craic dere baoy”
Great piece. I restacked. I honestly don't get it.
I am starting to form a hypothesis, may write about it at some point in the future....
Thank you!
